Missie en visie

Het Nederlands Instituut voor Biologie (NIBI) is de beroepsvereniging van ruim 6000 professionals in de biologie en levenswetenschappen. Het NIBI is een actieve, professionele organisatie met een duidelijk doel: het NIBI zet biologie op de kaart! Dat doet het NIBI op de volgende wijze:

Het belang van biologie
Het NIBI is ervan overtuigd dat biologische kennis van maatschappelijk belang is. Zo is biologische kennis bijvoorbeeld noodzakelijk bij het vinden van nieuwe duurzame manieren van voedselproductie, het produceren van veilig voedsel, het vinden van oplossingen in de gezondheidszorg, het beheren van ecosystemen, het oplossen van misdaden en het realiseren van een leefbare planeet ook voor toekomstige generaties. Het NIBI pleit voor stevige investering in fundamenteel onderzoek en aandacht voor de toepassingen daarvan. 

Sterk ledennetwerk
Het NIBI opereert als belangenbehartiger van de leden, is vertegenwoordiger van de biologie en zet zich in als vraagbaak, aanjager en verbinder. Dat doet het NIBI met kennis van onderzoek, onderwijs en arbeidsmarkt, journalistieke kwaliteit en het unieke (leden)netwerk.

Biologen en bedrijven verbinden
Het NIBI draagt bij aan op biologie gebaseerde bedrijvigheid in Nederland. Dat doet het NIBI door alle spelers in de biologie te verbinden. Het NIBI realiseert effectieve netwerken van NIBI-leden, koppelt bedrijven en instellingen en vraag en aanbod aan elkaar, optimaliseert aansluiting van opleidingen op de arbeidsmarkt, en bevordert contact tussen wetenschap en bedrijfsleven en tussen biologieprofessionals en aanstormend nieuw talent in het voortgezet onderwijs. Ook communiceert het NIBI naar het grotere publiek.

Bijblijven in de biologie
Het NIBI zorgt ervoor dat niet alleen haar leden, maar ook het onderwijs en bedrijfsleven bijblijven in de biologie. Dat doet het NIBI door het uitbrengen van het vakblad Bionieuws, het verzorgen van online content (nibi.nl, bionieuws.nl en Natuurwetenschapentechniek.nl) en social media kanalen. Daarnaast organiseert het NIBI jaarlijks grootschalige onderwijsconferenties voor het basisonderwijs en het voortgezet onderwijs. Het NIBI zorgt daarmee dat onderzoekers, ondernemers, docenten, leerkrachten en andere professionals bijblijven in de zich razendsnel ontwikkelende biologie.

Betekenisvol biologieonderwijs
Het NIBI zet zich in voor relevant, actueel en samenhangend biologieonderwijs van basisschool tot en met de universiteit en voor meer aandacht en lestijd voor biologie in het onderwijs. Ook zorgt het NIBI voor professionalisering van docenten door conferenties. Het NIBI realiseert goed lesmateriaal over biologie en natuur, wetenschap en techniekonderwijs. Het NIBI wijst erop dat steeds meer organisaties werken met biologische kennis; investeren in biologieonderwijs is noodzakelijk om de toekomstige behoefte aan excellent opgeleide biologen te kunnen vervullen. 

Biologie voor iedereen
Omdat iedereen dagelijks te maken krijgt met beslissingen over gezondheid, voeding en duurzaamheid wil het NIBI dat iedereen voldoende biologische kennis ontwikkelt om in de rol van ouder, consument, patiënt, politicus of bestuurder geïnformeerde beslissingen te nemen. Het NIBI maakt biologische kennis toegankelijk via online kanalen, conferenties en evenementen zoals de Week van de Biologie.

The importance of biology

NIBI firmly believes that biological knowledge is essential to society. Such knowledge is vital, for example, to finding new and sustainable ways of producing food, ensuring food safety, developing solutions in healthcare, managing ecosystems, solving crimes and creating a liveable planet for future generations.

NIBI advocates strong investment in fundamental research, alongside a focus on its practical applications.

A strong professional network

NIBI represents and advocates for its members, acts as a voice for biology and serves as a source of expertise, a catalyst for progress and a connector. It draws on its knowledge of research, education and the labour market, its commitment to high-quality journalism through Bionieuws, and its unique professional network of members.

Connecting biologists and businesses

NIBI supports the growth of biology-based businesses and activities in the Netherlands by bringing together stakeholders from across the biological sciences. It builds effective networks among NIBI members, connects businesses and institutions, and brings supply and demand together. It also works to better align educational programmes with labour market needs, promotes collaboration between academia and industry, and fosters connections between biology professionals and emerging talent in secondary education. In addition, NIBI communicates the importance of biology to a wider audience.

Keeping up with developments in biology

NIBI helps not only its members but also the education sector and businesses keep up with developments in biology. It does so by publishing the professional magazine Bionieuws, producing online content through nibi.nl, bionieuws.nl and Natuurwetenschapentechniek.nl, and maintaining social media channels.

In addition, NIBI organises large-scale annual education conferences for primary and secondary education. Through these activities, NIBI helps researchers, entrepreneurs, lecturers, teachers and other professionals stay up to date with the rapidly evolving field of biology.

Meaningful biology education

NIBI advocates relevant, up-to-date and coherent biology education at every level, from primary school to university, as well as greater attention to biology and more teaching time dedicated to the subject.

NIBI also supports the professional development of teachers through conferences. It develops high-quality teaching resources covering biology and nature, science and technology education.

NIBI emphasises that an increasing number of organisations rely on biological knowledge. Investing in biology education is therefore essential to meet the future demand for highly qualified biologists.

Biology for everyone

As everyone faces decisions about health, nutrition and sustainability in their daily lives, NIBI believes that everyone should develop sufficient biological knowledge to make informed decisions as a parent, consumer, patient, politician or policymaker.

NIBI makes biological knowledge accessible to everyone through online channels, conferences and events such as Biology Week (Week van de Biologie).
